Empowering Women Farmers in Al Jazeera Aba: A Success Story of Growth and Self Reliance

SOS Sahel Sudan via SIPRA project sharing a powerful example of grassroots change, in Al Jazeera Aba, women’s vegetable growing groups are not only improving their own incomes but also strengthening community resilience by boosting local food security. The success of women farmers in Al Jazeera Aba demonstrates the transformative power of empowerment and self-reliance. Their journey is showed how investing in women can uplift entire communities and create lasting change.

 

🌱 Women’s Green Groups: 30 Women Leading Change

The project supported three women’s vegetable‑growing groups, each consisting of 10 women, bringing the total to 30 empowered female farmers.
In addition, the “Mazraat Al‑Amal” (Hope Farm) Women’s Model Group, made up of 10 women, successfully cultivated jabarik as a demonstration of improved agricultural practices.

🛠️ Comprehensive Support for Sustainable Production

To ensure strong foundations for success, the project provided a package of integrated support, including:

  • Training sessions on improved agricultural practices and group management
  • Provision of Vegetable seeds such as arugula, carrots, eggplant, hot pepper, sweet pepper, purslane, molokhia, and more
  • Provision of Agricultural tools and equipment, including wheelbarrows, hoes, shovels, spraying pumps, watering cans, and brooms
  • Support landless with land sharing modality, covering rental, preparation, plot division, and irrigation services

🌾 Harvesting Success: From Self‑Sufficiency to Market Income

The results were remarkable. The women achieved:

  • Full household self‑sufficiency in fresh vegetables
  • Support to neighboring families, strengthening community ties
  • Marketable surplus, enabling the women to generate additional income and improve their economic stability

This initiative demonstrates how empowering women through agriculture can drive economic growth, improve nutrition, and foster resilience. It stands as a model for sustainable rural development in Sudan.
