Promoting Conflict Affected Community Livelihood Project/ at South and North Kordofan States
Construction of Three Community Seed Banks in Abujebeiha and Rashad Localities South Kordofan state:
SOS Sahel Sudan has constructed three community seed banks complimented with the establishment of seed bank systems in Abujebeiha and Rashad localities, South Kordofan State. This was achieved under the livelihood resilience project funded by the Norwegian Embassy. Such Seed banks serve 3,000 smallholder farmers across crisis‑prone areas in two South Kordofan localities, engaging both women and men. They are managed by three technically trained and fully functional seed bank committees to manage the Seedbanks.
The Community Seed Bank System aimed at enhancing community‑level access to both traditional and improved seed varieties while ensuring secure storage in areas affected by instability. It provides a reliable mechanism for responding to crisis‑related seed shortages and strengthens agricultural livelihoods and food security for vulnerable farming households.
Impact of the Community Seed Bank System:
- Improving access to traditional and improved seed varieties
- Ensuring secure storage in crisis‑affected areas
- Supporting sustainable seed use.
- Eenable community‑led seed multiplication and preservation of local varieties and restore lost crops
- Provide rapid response to disaster‑related seed shortages and offer affordable seeds to smallholder farmers
- Create a platform for biodiversity conservation and shared learning with research centers, government seed departments and private seed companies.
