Under the project “Reducing the Impact of predictable Hazards” implemented in partnership between SCI and SOS Sahel Sudan, a Community-Led Disaster Risk Reduction, Proactive Measures for Predictable Hazards is implemented in Agaig locality of Red Sea State

SOS Sahel Sudan is proud to lead a proactive, community-driven initiative to reduce the risks of predictable disasters—particularly floods in Tokar and Agaig localities.

Through inclusive consultations involving women, elders, children, persons with disabilities, and displaced families, we identified the most pressing hazards and their impact on each group. Floods and seasonal torrents emerged as the most critical threats.

Together with local stakeholders, we analyzed the timing, affected sectors, and available community capacities. A comprehensive action plan was developed, emphasizing:

  • Strengthening protective embankments in high-risk villages
  • Supporting vulnerable families with safe temporary shelters
  • Pre-positioning essential supplies near flood-prone areas
  • Coordinating with the Ministry of Agriculture’s Soil Conservation Department to address low-lying areas before the rainy season

Based on meteorological forecasts of rain fall and flooding, the trained community committees activated the plan. SOS Sahel Sudan provided tools and equipment, while the community led implementation using a “Cash for Work” model—ensuring both protection and economic support.

This initiative not only enhances disaster preparedness but also strengthens local ownership and resilience. The work continues, guided by the community and supported by SOS Sahel Sudan.
