Sustainable Water Solutions in Rashad Locality

Since 2022, SOS Sahel Sudan, with funding from the Norwegian Embassy in Sudan, has successfully constructed six sand dams in Rashad locality, South Kordofan State. With plans to build a seventh dam during the 2025–2026 dry season, this initiative marks a significant step toward sustainable water access and ecosystem resilience in the region.

Recent images captured in June at the end of the 2025 dry season show promising results: elevated water tables and substantial sand accumulation behind the dams. These outcomes demonstrate the impact of sand dams on groundwater storage, providing year-round water access for communities and livestock.

What is a Sand Dam?

A sand dam is a low-tech, low-cost, and eco-friendly water harvesting structure built across seasonal sandy riverbeds. During the rainy season, sand naturally builds up behind the dam instead of being washed away. This sand stores rainwater between its particles, which raises the water table and fosters a healthier, more fertile environment.

Long-Term Benefits:

  • ✅ Reliable year-round water access
  • 🐄 Support for livestock and agriculture
  • 🌱 Improved soil fertility and vegetation
  • 🌊 Strengthened community resilience to drought
  • 💧 Reduced stress on seasonal water sources

This approach not only addresses water scarcity but also promotes community empowerment and environmental sustainability.
