Implementing Solid Waste Management Campaigns in Kassala IDP Camps

SOS Sahel Sudan is actively working to improve the living conditions and health of internally displaced persons (IDPs) in Kassala State through implementing solid waste management campaigns. These campaigns are a key component of the WASH project: “Provide comprehensive WASH interventions to mitigate morbidity and mortality among children and their families in response to the Sudan crisis,” generously funded by the Sudan Humanitarian Fund (SHF).

Project Context:

Recognizing the critical need for improved sanitation and waste management in IDP camps, SOS Sahel Sudan is implementing these campaigns in the Onion Factory and West Airport IDP camps in Kassala State. This initiative falls under our comprehensive WASH program, which aims to decrease mortality and morbidity of 220,000 affected people in Kassala, Halfa, West Kassala, and Kashm Algirba localities though provision of WASH services including solid waste management campaigns covering the period from 3rd March – 2nd August 2025.

Solid waste management and cleaning campaigns in the West Airport and Onion Factory IDPs camps in Kassala, are aiming at achieving the following:

  • Ensuring affected IDPs and host communities have improved access to safe sanitation services
  • Enhancing waste management services at the community and IDPs camps
  • Enhance overall public health within the camps.
  • Reducing the prevalence of sanitation-related diseases among vulnerable IDPs and host communities.

This activity directly contributes to the project’s overarching goal of increasing households’ access to clean water, adequate sanitation facilities, and hygiene promotion services. By addressing the challenges of solid waste, we are creating a healthier and more sustainable environment for the residents of these camps.
